How do you ‘know’?

I mean, how do you REALLY know that you are meant to be a writer? Do you write because you love it, write because you have to, or just write because you know how? And then there is the whole ‘getting published’ thing to take into consideration. Yes, it is the most awesome feeling in the world to get that acceptance email/letter/phone call and it rips you right off of the planet and floats you in outer space for a while. But then comes the edits. The first time any writer opens up that email/letter and sees all of the slashes and marks on their perfect, ready for publication (yes, I know it really isn’t perfect or ready for much of anything. Just think back to that day with me, will ya?), it is like that editor just hopped onto your back and plunged a knife right through your heart. Turns out it is just your ego they are stabbing…maybe a bit of your pride too, but it still hurts. I know that this is a necessary evil and it is nearly impossible to recognize your own writing bo-bos, especially starting out, but there really is no way to truly prepare yourself. It gets easier as it goes along and I’ve learned not to hold a grudge, but I just don’t know if I am really cut out for this. I got an email from Ms. Dayna Hart (mwah and thanks, btw) that pretty much mirrored how I felt, so I know I’m not the only one. I’ve cried to Ms. Jennifer Leeland (mwah and thanks to you too!) enough that she is probably going to start blocking my messages and she has talked me down from the cliff more than once. Ms. Leese has put up with me in person and still loves me (or at least pretends to!), so that tells you how strong of a woman SHE is! Scooper has been such a wonderful friend and is always there to talk when I need her. There are really too many people to count or list, especially with Elle, Maria, Gwen, Jennifer and everyone else at Romance Divas! Anyhow, these wonderful people are here to support me and still I have doubts. Anyway, my question is this: How do you really know that you have everything inside and out that you need to survive being a writer?

1. If you are choking on an ice cube simply pour a cup of boiling
water down your throat. Presto! The blockage will instantly remove itself.

2. Avoid cutting yourself slicing vegetables by getting someone else
to hold while you chop.

3. Avoid arguments with the Mrs. about lifting the toilet seat by
using the sink.

4. For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and bleed
for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to
use a timer.

5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you
from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives, then you
will be afraid to cough.

7. You only need two tools in life – WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it
doesn’t move and should, use the WD-40.. If it shouldn’t move and does, use
the duct tape.

8. Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

Okay, my quest for organization is taking me into the dark realm of the dust bunnies. Yes, they do exist, my friends and they are angry! My cats are enjoying it though and find it quite funny to run through my pile of dirt and bunnies to chase one down the hall. DAMN YOU WOOD FLOORS! Anyhow, I have now plunged myself head on into the office. Take into consideration as you work up pity for me, that this room has been run by my husband up until now. Yes, this is the epitomy of a ‘man-cave’ and he wonders why I cry at the thought of cleaning this up. We have an UNUSED weight bench taking up the corner of the room by the window (that is getting moved into the garage, thankyouverymuch) with God-only-knows-what piled all over it, a gun safe (freakishly HUGE, but completely legal since hubby is a gun dealer too) that blocks the closet, file cabinets everywhere with mailing boxes, envelopes, stickers and anything else remotely related to that area stacked on top, and a desk armoire filled with scraps of paper, invoices, statements and files that I have no idea what to do with. Tell me, dear reader, would you go into this mess and organize or just toss a match in and let the insurance company cover the damage??? I’m completely KIDDING about the match thing…sorta…so don’t go calling my insurance agent just yet. Any organizationally minded people want to offer advice?? Dayna?? Where’s that cup of coffee you promised? Lisa? This one might even be beyond your anal talents! 😀

Vista Print T-shirts

I have been a customer with Vista Print www.vistaprint.com for a long time.  Their stuff is great and extrememly affordable (especially when they run the freebie stuff!), so when they offered a free t-shirt, I thought ‘why not?’  I got it in the mail today and it was like Christmas when I opened the box.  I’m tickled with the quality and the price can’t be beat.  If you can’t read the wording under the rose, it has my tag line about telling stories.  If you haven’t ordered from them before, you really should.  Promo postcards are great and the guidelines for uploading your own cover graphics are on the Romance Diva’s website.  Leave me a message if you need exact directions to them.  Stella Price has been a major blessing with that stuff!  So, what do you think of my new shirt?!

I’m trying to figure out how to break that word down into four letters, because that is where it belongs. I have spent the day trying to ORGANIZE my writing world and I’m one tiny, itty bitty step from the edge of the proverbial cliff of insanity and I just might jump. Yup, I am gonna do it. I’m gonna throw myself over the edge and retire to a nice little white room with nice padded walls AND NO COMPUTER EQUIPMENT!!! Okay, I guess I can’t really do that because I would die without an internet connection. Deep cleansing breath…nope, didn’t work. Oh well, I’m off to organize some more and try to stay away from my computer. Wish me luck!

Today was my last day in banking…at least for now.  I am officially free 🙂  I will miss some of the people who I worked with, but the bonuses of leaving finally outweighed staying.  My writing is going to take first priority in my life now, although I will be responsible for all of the bookkeeping for our cleaning company and our rental properties.  My children are grown and I haven’t had a time in my life where I’ve not been responsible for someone else.  I hope that I can live up to my own expectations.  I’ve also joined a critique group and will be jumping in head first on Monday!  Okay, I’ve got to run now but wanted to be sure and post the picture of the cookie-cake the girls from my department brought in for my last day!  Isn’t this just the sweetest thing you have ever seen?
